7-Seater Family Cars in Thailand: How to Choose the Right Type and Model

Most families in Thailand choose between four kinds of 7-seater: an easy-entry MPV for city driving, a pickup-based PPV for rough roads and floods, a car-based 7-seat SUV if the third row is only used now and then, and a van for groups of eight or more. Decide by who sits in row three and where you drive. Talata lists used 7-seaters of every type in one place, so you can compare prices and contact owners directly.
What Kinds of 7-Seater Cars Are Sold in Thailand?
A 7-seater is a passenger car with three rows of seats for seven people. In Thailand they fall into four groups, and the difference lies in how the car is built rather than in the seat count.
MPV: the easy-entry people carrier
MPVs are built around passengers. The floor is low, the roof is tall and the cabin is a practical box, with soft suspension that rides like a sedan. Familiar examples are the Toyota Veloz, Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Innova Zenix and Nissan Serena, while the Toyota Alphard sits at the luxury end of the same class.
PPV: the Thai-market pickup-based SUV
PPV stands for Pickup Passenger Vehicle. It is a term used mainly in Thailand for a 7-seat SUV built on a pickup truck chassis, with high ground clearance, a diesel engine and often four-wheel drive. They handle flooded streets and dirt roads with ease, but the ride is firmer and the climb in is a stretch for small children and grandparents. The main models are the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Isuzu MU-X, Ford Everest and Nissan Terra.
7-seat SUV: car-based and easier to park
A car-based SUV with a third row drives more like a sedan and is lighter than a PPV, which makes it easier in narrow sois and car parks. The trade-off is a third row that suits children or short trips. Examples include the Honda BR-V, Nissan X-Trail e-POWER, Mazda CX-8, and the 7-seat Honda CR-V found on the used market. For the full background on the terms, see What Is an SUV.
Family van: when seven seats are not enough
Vans such as the Hyundai H-1 and Toyota Hiace Majesty seat 11 people. They suit families who travel eight to ten at a time or need room for a wheelchair. At over five metres long they are awkward in mall and condo car parks, and they are taxed on a different basis from 7-seaters.
| Type | Step-in height | Rear doors | City driving | Rough roads and floods |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MPV | Low | Hinged, or sliding on larger models | Easy, soft ride | Fair, limited clearance |
| PPV | High | Hinged | Large and heavy, firm ride | Best, many offer 4WD |
| 7-seat SUV | Medium | Hinged | Easiest in the group | Fair |
| Van | Medium with a step | Sliding | Long, hard to park | Fair |
How to Choose a 7-Seater for Your Family
Before you compare brands, answer three questions about how your family really uses a car.
How often will all seven seats be used? If you fill the car every day, for example on the school run with grandparents on board, the third row has to work for real, so look at a mid-size MPV or a PPV with a roomy third row. If seven people travel together only a few times a year, a 7-seat SUV or a small MPV is enough and costs less to buy and run.
Where do you drive most? In Bangkok traffic and tight parking, an MPV or car-based SUV is far less tiring. For trips upcountry, hill roads or areas that flood in the rainy season, a 4WD PPV earns its keep thanks to its ground clearance and a diesel engine that copes with a full load.
What is your all-in budget? The purchase price is only part of it. A 2.4 to 3.0 litre 7-seater pays several thousand baht a year in road tax, larger tyres cost more, and first-class insurance rises with the car's value. Budget for the price plus a year of running costs.
Which 7-Seater Should You Buy? Models by Type
New-car prices below are starting prices from each brand's Thai website on 23 October 2026. Promotions and trims change often, so confirm with a dealer before you sign.
MPVs under 1 million baht
The Toyota Veloz is the usual starting point: Smart at 795,000 baht and Premium at 875,000 baht, with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and flexible seating. The Mitsubishi Xpander is now sold only as a hybrid with a 1.6-litre petrol engine and electric motor, at 935,000 baht for the Xpander HEV and from 953,000 baht for the raised Xpander Cross HEV. Thailand's official ECO Sticker database lists the 2026 Xpander HEV at 4.8 litres per 100 km, about 20.8 km per litre.
The Honda BR-V, which Honda markets as a 7-seat SUV, starts at 915,000 baht. The Suzuki XL7 Hybrid lists at 825,000 baht, with a campaign price of 799,000 baht in October 2026. If six seats are enough, the current Hyundai Stargazer is a 6-seater, priced at 795,000 baht (Trend 6) and 875,000 baht (Smart 6).
Mid-size and large MPVs
The Toyota Innova Zenix is a 7-seat hybrid MPV at 1,379,000 baht (2.0 HEV Smart) and 1,489,000 baht (2.0 HEV Premium), with clearly more cabin space than the smaller MPVs and an ECO Sticker figure of 4.8 litres per 100 km for the 2025 model. The Nissan Serena e:POWER uses a petrol engine as a generator for its electric drive motor, so it never needs plugging in.
Going larger, the MG Maxus 7 electric MPV costs 1,399,000 baht and the Kia Carnival HEV starts at 2,499,000 baht. At the top sit the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire 2.5 hybrids from 4,269,000 baht. Most families buy these luxury MPVs used: on Talata, Alphard listings ran from 750,000 baht for an older 2.4 Hybrid to about 2 million baht for 2022–2023 cars.
PPVs and 7-seat SUVs
| Model | Starting price (baht) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Fortuner Leader | 1,239,000 | Five trims; Legender from 1,643,000 |
| Isuzu MU-X Active | 1,197,000 | Top RS trim from 1,627,000 |
| Mitsubishi Pajero Sport | 1,389,000 | Elite Edition 2WD 1,579,000 |
| Ford Everest Active | 1,379,000 | Range tops out at 2,309,000 |
All four share pickup-based construction and start within 200,000 baht of each other. What separates them is engine size, which trims in your budget offer 4WD, and how comfortable the third row is, which you should test in person rather than take from a review. The Fortuner's edge is its sheer numbers on the used market, which gives you the widest choice of years and condition. The Nissan Terra, with its 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel, is still sold new and is often overlooked.
On the car-based side, a 7-seat Honda CR-V is only available used: the 2017 model with the 1.6 i-DTEC diesel, or the 2023 1.5 VTEC Turbo EL 4WD. The CR-V sold new today is a 5-seat e:HEV. For a new 7-seat SUV, the Mazda CX-8 and Nissan X-Trail e-POWER are both still on sale.
Family vans
The Hyundai H-1, an 11-seater, is the van you will see most often on the used market. Hyundai has stopped selling it new; the final Elite FE edition launched on 26 September 2023. Its successor, the Hyundai Staria, arrived in Thailand on 9 July 2021 and is now offered in diesel and hybrid form, with the Staria Hybrid at 2,099,000 baht. The Toyota Hiace Majesty (11 seats) and Toyota Commuter are other high-roof options found used.
Hybrid and electric 7-seaters
Full hybrids sold new include the Innova Zenix HEV, Xpander HEV, Xpander Cross HEV and Alphard/Vellfire HEV. The Suzuki XL7 Hybrid uses a lighter Smart Hybrid system, an integrated starter generator with a 12-volt battery that assists the 1.5-litre engine, so it saves some fuel but is not a full hybrid.
The most affordable electric 7-seater is the BYD M6, offered with six or seven seats. Its official launch prices in March 2026 ran from 859,900 to 959,900 baht, and dealers advertised lower campaign prices, such as 769,900 baht for the 6-seat Dynamic in October 2026; the 7-seat layout comes with the Extended version. Larger electric MPVs include the MG Maxus 9 from 1,849,900 baht and the Xpeng X9 at 2,399,000 to 2,799,000 baht. Before going electric, check that you can charge at home or at your condo, and remember that a fully loaded car on a long trip upcountry uses more energy than the advertised range suggests.
Which 7-Seater Has the Most Comfortable Third Row?
By type, mid-size and large MPVs and vans give adults the most comfortable third row, followed by PPVs. In most 7-seat SUVs and small MPVs, row three is for children or short hops.
When you view a car, ask the tallest adult in the family to sit in the third row and check four things. Are the knees higher than the hips? Many PPVs have a raised third-row floor that leaves passengers sitting knees-up. How many steps does it take to fold the second row, and can a child do it? Are there air vents for the back rows, or only one roof vent in row two? And with all seats up, how much luggage space is left behind row three?
If you use child seats, check the owner's manual or spec sheet for which rows have ISOFIX anchors, as this varies by model. Thailand's child-seat rule, in force since 5 September 2022, requires children under six or shorter than 135 cm to use a child seat or other restraint, with a fine of up to 2,000 baht. Enforcement has been debated since the rule began, but the safety case is the same either way.

Running Costs: Road Tax, Fuel and Resale
Extra seats do not raise your road tax. A private car with up to seven seats is taxed on engine size, exactly like a sedan, and the cost climbs with every cc above 1,800.
The Department of Land Transport charges 0.50 baht per cc for the first 600 cc, 1.50 baht per cc from 601 to 1,800 cc, and 4.00 baht per cc above that. Cars registered for more than five years get a discount that starts at 10% in year six and rises by 10% a year to 50% from year ten.
| Engine | cc | Annual tax before age discount |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Veloz 1.5 petrol | 1,496 | about 1,644 baht |
| Innova Zenix 2.0 hybrid | 1,987 | about 2,848 baht |
| Fortuner 2.4 diesel | 2,393 | about 4,472 baht |
| Fortuner 2.8 diesel | 2,755 | about 5,920 baht |
| Any 3,000 cc engine | 3,000 | about 6,900 baht |
These figures are calculated from the official rates and Toyota's published engine sizes. You can check the exact amount for a specific car through the Department of Land Transport's annual-tax lookup.
Vans with more than seven seats are taxed by weight instead: 1,900 baht a year for 2,001–2,500 kg and 2,200 baht for 2,501–3,000 kg. Hybrids still have an engine, so they are taxed on cc like petrol cars. Fully electric cars with up to seven seats are taxed by weight at the rate for vehicles with more than seven seats. The earlier 80% EV tax cut applied only to new EVs registered before 10 November 2025, and only for their first year. A new draft decree offering an 80% cut for three years to EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids was still under public consultation in August 2026, so check with the Department of Land Transport whether it is in force before buying.
On fuel, the Innova Zenix HEV and Xpander HEV share an ECO Sticker figure of 4.8 litres per 100 km, while the 2022 petrol Xpander 1.5 was rated at 6.1 litres per 100 km. Real-world numbers with a full car are usually worse than lab figures. For more comparisons, see our guide to fuel-efficient cars in Thailand.
Resale value is the cost people forget. A simple check is to look up the model you want across listings three to five years apart and see how far the price falls each year against today's new price. Models with plenty of listings and gentle year-on-year drops tend to be easier to sell when it is time to change cars.
Before You Buy: What to Test
A solo test drive tells you little about a family car. At a showroom or with a private seller, try this:
- Bring the people who will actually ride along, and have the tallest sit in row three for ten minutes.
- Fold and unfold rows two and three yourself and note how much effort it takes.
- Load what you really carry, such as a stroller, a suitcase or a wheelchair.
- Fit your own child seat to the car's anchor points.
- Reverse into the space at your home, condo or office. A car that is too long for your bay is a daily problem.
- With a used car, ask to see the registration book, check the service history and run the rear air-con during the drive.
Once you agree on a used car, the next steps are the paperwork, deposit and ownership transfer, covered in our guide to the private used-car purchase process. If you are not a Thai national, read Can foreigners buy a car in Thailand first, since registration needs extra documents.
Compare several cars in the same budget, see each one in person and ask the owner for its full history. When you find the one that fits your family, start the conversation with the seller on Talata.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people does a family need before a 7-seater makes sense?
A 7-seater is worth it when five or more people regularly travel together, or when you need room for a wheelchair or several child seats. A family of four or five that fills seven seats only occasionally may do better with a mid-size 5-seater with a large boot.
Which new 7-seaters cost under 1 million baht in Thailand?
New 7-seaters under 1 million baht include the Toyota Veloz, Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV, Honda BR-V, Suzuki XL7 Hybrid and the 7-seat BYD M6. Starting prices ran from about 790,000 to 960,000 baht in October 2026. The same budget buys a used Fortuner or Hyundai H-1.
Which 7-seat hybrids are available in Thailand?
The full hybrid 7-seaters on sale are the Toyota Innova Zenix HEV, Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV, and Toyota Alphard/Vellfire HEV. The Innova Zenix HEV and Xpander HEV both carry an ECO Sticker rating of 4.8 litres per 100 km. The Suzuki XL7 Hybrid uses a 12-volt assist system, and the Nissan Serena e:POWER uses its engine only to generate electricity.
Which Toyota models have seven seats?
Toyota sells the Veloz (small MPV), Innova Zenix (hybrid MPV), Fortuner (PPV) and Alphard/Vellfire (luxury MPV) new with seven seats. On the used market you will also find the Innova Crysta and Sienta.
Can I fit a child seat in the third row?
It depends on the model. Check the manual or spec sheet for ISOFIX anchors or a three-point seat belt in row three; if there are neither, put younger children in row two and test-fit your seat before you buy.
Is road tax higher on a 7-seater than a 5-seater?
The seat count itself does not raise the tax. Any private car with up to seven seats is taxed on engine size, and 7-seaters usually pay more only because they have bigger engines, for example about 6,900 baht a year for 3,000 cc against about 1,644 baht for the 1,496 cc Toyota Veloz.
Which 7-seaters hold their value best?
Models with many listings and small year-on-year price drops are usually the easiest to resell. Compare listings of the same model across several years against today's new price to see the trend. To get a good price when you sell, keep the service history complete and photograph the cabin and third row clearly.
