How to Renew Car Tax Online in Thailand (2026): Who Qualifies, Steps and How Long the Sticker Takes

You can renew car (road) tax online in Thailand through the Department of Land Transport's eservice.dlt.go.th, the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app or Paotang. The car needs valid compulsory insurance, must not run on LPG or NGV or have a cancelled registration, and must pass inspection if it is over 7 years old. The tax sticker arrives by post within 5–10 working days. This guide is from Talata, the Thai marketplace that puts used car listings in one place.
What Online Car Tax Renewal Is, and How It Differs From the DLT Office
Online car tax renewal means paying your car's annual tax to the Department of Land Transport through its website or an app, then receiving the tax sticker by post instead of queuing at a DLT office.
Thai drivers often call this "renewing the registration", and expats tend to say "road tax". It's the same annual tax either way, and the amount is identical online and at the office. What changes is a small delivery fee, a payment fee and a wait of several days for the physical sticker.
People also mix up the tax and the compulsory insurance known as Por Ror Bor. The tax goes to the state, while Por Ror Bor is third-party injury cover required by law, and you need a valid policy before you can pay the tax. Our guide to how much Por Ror Bor costs lists the premium for each vehicle type. Motorbike owners use the same system with a different age rule, covered in our motorcycle tax renewal guide.
Which Cars Can Be Renewed Online, and Which Must Go to the DLT
Check your car against the conditions on the DLT e-service site before you log in. If it fails any of them, the system will stop you before the payment step.
- Private cars (รย.1 and รย.2), private pickups (รย.3) or motorcycles (รย.12), registered in any province
- Paid no more than 90 days before the tax due date
- Cars (รย.1, รย.2, รย.3) more than 7 years past their first registration must pass a private inspection centre (Tor Ror Or) first
- Cars with tax overdue by more than a year must also pass inspection, even if they are newer than 7 years
- Cars must weigh no more than 2,200 kg, or be a type that does not need prior approval before paying tax
- Not an LPG or NGV vehicle, and not a tax-exempt vehicle
- Registration not cancelled, and the vehicle not under a seizure order
Can a car over 7 years old be renewed online?
Yes, once it has passed inspection at a Tor Ror Or centre and the result has reached the DLT system. From there, the steps are the same as for a newer car.
The common mistake is logging in before the inspection, which leaves you stuck at the vehicle-check stage. You can have the car inspected up to 90 days before the tax expiry date. Our guide on how many years before a car needs inspection explains how the age is counted for each vehicle type.
How early can you renew?
Up to 90 days before the tax due date. Try any earlier and the system won't take your payment.
If the tax has already run out, the 90-day window does not apply and you can pay straight away.
LPG/NGV cars, cancelled registrations and seized vehicles
Cars running on LPG or NGV cannot be renewed online. The gas system has to be checked by a DLT-approved inspector, who issues a certificate of inspection and testing (often called the engineer's certificate), and you take that with the registration book to a DLT office.
If tax goes unpaid for 3 years in a row, the registration is cancelled under section 35/3 of the Motor Vehicle Act. At that point paying the tax alone is no longer enough: the plates must be returned and the car registered again. The full process and costs are in our guide to expired car tax. For a car under a seizure order, contact the DLT office or the authority that ordered the seizure first.
What You Need Before You Start
You won't need photocopies, but have these ready before you start:
- A government Digital ID such as ThaID to sign in. The first time, you verify your identity as the system instructs
- The registration book, or a photo of it, for the plate number, province and vehicle details
- Valid compulsory insurance. The system checks it against the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) database; if you don't have a policy, you can buy one during the process
- A Tor Ror Or inspection result if the car is over 7 years old or the tax is more than a year overdue
- An email address for the receipt and a postal address for the sticker
- A bank account, a credit or debit card, or a banking app that can scan a QR code
If you don't have a Thai ID card
ThaID registration relies on a Thai national ID card, and a pink ID card for foreigners does not automatically qualify, according to expat reporting in October 2026. If you can't get a Digital ID, the DLT website and Paotang may not work for you.
Two options remain. A Thai partner, relative or friend with ThaID can use the "pay on behalf of the owner" option in the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app, which asks for the owner's ID number. Or you can pay in person at a DLT office or a drive-through tax point with the registration book; counter staff mostly work in Thai, so a Thai-speaking friend helps. Counter Service at 7-Eleven asks for an ID card and a copy of the registration book.
Checking how much tax you owe
You can see the amount due under "สอบถามข้อมูลค่าภาษีรถประจำปี" (annual vehicle tax enquiry) on the e-service site without signing in. Enter the vehicle details and the system shows the total.
The easiest place to find the expiry date is the tax sticker on your windscreen. If that date has passed, the amount shown will include the surcharge for the late period.
Where to Renew Car Tax Online: DLT Website, DLT App or Paotang
All three channels feed the same DLT system, so pick the one you find easiest.
| Channel | Vehicles | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| eservice.dlt.go.th | Private cars, pickups and motorcycles | Buy Por Ror Bor in the system, several ways to pay, parcel tracking | Sign-in with Digital ID required |
| DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app | รย.1, รย.2, รย.3, รย.12 | The DLT's own app, pay on behalf of the owner, shows an electronic tax sticker while you wait | Register and verify with ThaID first |
| Paotang app | รย.1, รย.2, รย.3, รย.12 | Pay on behalf of the owner, electronic tax sticker in the app for 15 days from payment | No LPG/NGV, tax-exempt, seized or modified vehicles |
For a first renewal, the website shows every step most clearly. If you already use Paotang and want proof on your phone straight away, Paotang is quicker. Whichever you choose, go through eservice.dlt.go.th or apps from the official app stores, and never tap a car tax link sent by SMS or chat.
7-Eleven, Counter Service and drive-through: do they count as online?
No, you pay in person. Counter Service at 7-Eleven accepts the same vehicle types as the online system with no age limit, though cars over 7 years old still need a Tor Ror Or inspection first. Bring an ID card and a copy of the registration book; the receipt and sticker are posted to the address on the ID card within 10 days.
Drive Thru for Tax at DLT offices and Shop Thru for Tax in shopping malls hand you the sticker on the spot, but opening days and hours vary by location. Call the DLT hotline 1584 before you go.
How to Renew Car Tax Online on the DLT Website, Step by Step
These steps follow the live e-service site. If you have everything above to hand, it doesn't take long.
- Go to eservice.dlt.go.th
- Sign in with a government Digital ID such as ThaID
- Choose "ยื่นชำระภาษีรถยนต์ประจำปี" (pay annual vehicle tax)
- Enter the car's details to register it in the system. The system checks the compulsory insurance and the inspection result; if you don't have Por Ror Bor yet, you can buy it at this step
- Enter the postal address for the sticker
- Choose how to pay: direct debit from a bank account, a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card, a printed payment slip to pay at a bank counter, ATM or banking app, or a QR code scanned in a banking app within 15 minutes
- Once payment goes through, the receipt is emailed to you. Keep the reference number to track the order
Using the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app
The vehicle conditions are the same as on the website. The difference is the set-up: install the ThaID app first, then register in DLT Vehicle Tax Plus with your ID number, name, email and phone number, confirm the OTP, set a 6-digit PIN and verify your identity with ThaID.
Once signed in, open "ชำระภาษีรถ" (pay vehicle tax) and choose "ชำระภาษีรถตนเอง" (pay for my own vehicle) or "ชำระภาษีแทนเจ้าของรถ" (pay on behalf of the owner), pick the vehicle type and follow the prompts. After paying, you can show the electronic tax sticker under "เครื่องหมายการเสียภาษี" (tax sticker).
Using Paotang
Paotang accepts the same vehicle types as in the table above, and the fees match the website.
Choose "ชำระภาษีรถประจำปี" (annual vehicle tax), select your own vehicle or pay on behalf of the owner, enter the odometer reading and the delivery address, then pick a payment method. Track the order under "ติดตามสถานะ" (track status). The app shows an electronic tax sticker for 15 days from payment while the physical one is in the post.
What Online Renewal Costs

There are three parts to the bill.
The first is the tax itself, set by vehicle type and engine size and identical to what you would pay at the DLT. Private cars registered for more than 5 years get a reduction, starting at 10% in the 6th year and rising to 50% from the 10th year. Our guide to car tax by engine size has the full table.
The second is the 32 baht postal delivery fee for the sticker.
The third is the payment fee: 20 baht for direct debit or paying at a bank counter, or 2% plus 7% VAT on the total if you pay by credit card.
For example, a 4-year-old 1,500 cc saloon pays 1,650 baht in annual tax. Add 32 baht delivery and a 20 baht bank fee, and the total is 1,702 baht. Buying Por Ror Bor in the system for a private car with up to 7 seats adds 645.21 baht.
Cars that need inspection pay the Tor Ror Or fee separately; see our Tor Ror Or inspection guide for current rates. If the tax is already late, a surcharge of 1% applies for each month or part of a month.
How Long the Tax Sticker Takes to Arrive, and Driving While You Wait
The sticker should reach you within about 5–10 working days of a successful payment.
While you wait, a 2023 DLT notice lets owners who have paid show an electronic tax sticker in the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app for up to 15 days, until the physical sticker arrives. If you paid through Paotang, the app shows one for 15 days as well. Keep the emailed receipt as backup.
Once the sticker arrives, put it where it can be seen clearly from outside. Driving without displaying the tax sticker carries a fine of up to 2,000 baht. If it gets lost or damaged, you can get a replacement at a DLT office; our guide to replacing a lost tax sticker covers the steps.
Paid but no sticker yet? Track it here
Use "ตรวจสอบผลการชำระภาษี/เปลี่ยนช่องทางชำระเงิน" (check tax payment / change payment method) on the e-service site to see the delivery status and EMS tracking number.
If more than 10 working days have passed, or the status hasn't moved, have your reference number and receipt ready and contact the Bangkok Area 5 Land Transport Office (online tax) on 02-271-8712 or 02-271-8725 during office hours, or email managearea5@dlt.mail.go.th. Calls are usually answered in Thai.
Can't Renew Online? Common Causes and Fixes
If the car meets every condition above and the system still won't let you continue, it's usually one of these.
"Compulsory insurance not found" or "vehicle not found"
The system checks Por Ror Bor against the OIC database, and if it can't find the policy you can't move on. Usually the insurer hasn't sent the data through yet, or the plate number or province on the policy doesn't match the registration book. If you already have a policy, contact the insurer first rather than buying another one and paying twice. If you really don't have one, buy it in the system or from any insurer and come back.
If the message says the vehicle can't be found, compare the plate number, province and vehicle type you entered with the registration book.
Inspection result not showing yet
The Tor Ror Or centre sends the result to the DLT system. If you log in right after the inspection, it may not be there yet. Try again later, and if it still doesn't appear, ask the inspection centre.
Unpaid traffic fines: tax renewed, but no real sticker
The Royal Thai Police and the DLT signed an agreement on 23 July 2026. For tickets issued from 1 August 2026 and left unpaid, a reminder is sent first, and the data reaches the DLT within about 60–90 days. Tickets issued before 1 August 2026 are not affected.
Once the data is in the system, you can still pay the tax, but you get a temporary tax receipt valid for 30 days instead of the real sticker. Pay the fine within those 30 days to collect the sticker; if the temporary receipt runs out, you are treated as driving without a tax sticker. Reports on the measure describe renewals at DLT offices, so if you renew online, check for unpaid tickets and settle them before paying the tax.
You can pay outstanding fines to the registrar at a DLT office when you go to renew. Our guide to checking traffic fines by licence plate shows how to see whether you have any.
If the website won't load or you hit another problem, contact the DLT Information Technology Centre on 02-271-8888 ext. 9314 or email eservice@dlt.mail.go.th.
Buying or Selling a Used Car: Checking the Tax Before Transfer
Unpaid tax blocks a transfer outright. Under section 35/1 of the Motor Vehicle Act, while a car has tax outstanding the registrar will not carry out any registration work on it, including a change of ownership, until the tax is paid in full. If the tax lapses for 3 full years the registration is cancelled, and the car must be registered again before it can be transferred.
If you are buying, check the expiry date on the tax sticker before paying a deposit, look up the amount due in the tax enquiry menu on the e-service site, and ask the seller directly about unpaid traffic tickets, since tickets issued from 1 August 2026 now affect the sticker. If the car is still on finance, the seller is only the possessor and the finance company is the legal owner in the registration book; check that alongside the other points in our guide to checking a used car's history.
If you are selling, renew the tax and Por Ror Bor before listing, and put both expiry dates in the description. Buyers can see at a glance that nothing is outstanding, and the tax won't turn into a bargaining point.
Buyer or seller, check the tax, insurance and registration book carefully and compare several cars before deciding. When you find the right one, start the conversation with the owner through Talata.
Buying or Selling a Used Car on Talata: Why It Helps
For buyers, Talata brings used car listings from owners and sellers into one place. Filter by make, budget or area, compare prices on one page, and message the owner directly to ask about the tax expiry date, the insurance and the car's history before arranging a viewing.
For sellers, listing is simple: add photos, details and the tax and insurance status, and serious buyers get in touch with what they need to decide. Want to sell your car sooner? Get started on Talata.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need ThaID to renew car tax online?
Yes, the DLT website asks you to sign in with a government Digital ID such as ThaID, and the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app asks you to verify with ThaID. If you don't have one yet, register and verify in the ThaID app first. If you can't get ThaID, for example without a Thai ID card, renew in person at a DLT office or a drive-through tax point instead.
Can I renew online if my compulsory insurance has expired?
Yes, you can buy Por Ror Bor in the system while you pay the tax. The system detects that the policy has lapsed and lets you buy one before the payment step. For a private car with up to 7 seats, the premium is 645.21 baht.
My car tax is a few days late. Can I still renew online?
Yes, as long as it is less than a year overdue and the car meets the other conditions. The amount due includes a 1% monthly surcharge, and even a few days late counts as a full month. If it is later than that, our guide to expired car tax explains how the surcharge adds up.
What happens if I don't put the tax sticker on the car?
You can be fined up to 2,000 baht for driving without displaying the tax sticker, even if the tax is fully paid. Put it on as soon as it arrives, somewhere clearly visible from outside.
Can I pay car tax for my partner's or my company's car?
Yes, both the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app and Paotang have a "pay on behalf of the owner" option. In the DLT app you enter the owner's ID card number, or the company registration number for a car registered to a company. Have that number and the registration book details ready before you start.
My car is on finance. Can I renew the tax myself?
You can use the "pay on behalf of the owner" option, because on a financed car the finance company is the legal owner and you are the possessor. The DLT manual does not say whose number to enter in this case. If the system won't accept it, ask the finance company or call 1584.
I paid the tax twice by mistake. Can I get a refund?
Yes, if both payments fall in the same tax year, for example online and again at a DLT office. Under "ตรวจสอบผลการชำระภาษี/เปลี่ยนช่องทางชำระเงิน" the status will show "พบความผิดพลาดติดต่อกรม" (error found, contact the DLT). Print the document from that page and submit it with the original receipt, a copy of the registration book page showing the legal owner, and a copy of the legal owner's ID card.
The tax runs out while I'm selling the car. Who should renew it?
It's up to the buyer and seller, but renewing before you sell makes the sale easier, because a car with valid tax has nothing outstanding at transfer. If you agree the buyer will renew, put that in the sale contract and don't let the due date pass before the transfer.
If I renew early and then sell, does the tax stay with the car?
Yes, car tax belongs to the vehicle, not the owner. The sticker stays valid until its expiry date after the car changes hands, so a seller who has already renewed can mention it in the listing as a selling point.
