How much of the renewal can be done online in 2026
Short answer: not all of it. Two steps are genuinely online, the training and the queue booking. Everything after that still requires you to show up in person.
The ministerial regulation that allows license renewal through an electronic system took effect on 4 March 2026. The system that would let you finish the whole thing without travelling was pushed back, because the digital medical certificate link with the Ministry of Public Health still had to be completed. The department had expected to launch it around June 2026, but as of September 2026 there is still no announcement confirming it is live. When it does launch, it will only cover people aged 55 or under whose license is either still valid or has been expired for no more than a year. If you are over 55, or your license lapsed more than a year ago, you will still be going to a transport office.
The one part that cannot be replaced online is the physical fitness test, which checks four things: colour vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and brake reaction time. Identity verification and collecting the physical card also happen on site.
The renewal process for cars and motorcycles
There are really only three stages. Get the order right and you will be in and out of the transport office in one visit.
First, pass the online course on DLT e-Learning. It takes one to three hours depending on your license type and status. Then book your appointment through DLT Smart Queue, picking the date, time and branch that suit you. Finally, turn up on the day: submit documents, take the fitness test, pay, have your photo taken and collect the new card. It is normally done within a single day.
A common mistake is arriving late in the afternoon. The fee counter closes at 3.30 pm, so if the queue runs long you may have to come back another day. Aim for the morning or early afternoon.
You can renew at any transport office in the country. There is no requirement to go back to the province on your house registration, so pick whichever branch is easiest to reach.

How far ahead can you renew a Thai driver's license
A five-year private license can be renewed up to 6 months (180 days) before it expires. Renewing early does not cost you the remaining time, because the new card runs on from the old expiry date.
Your training result has a shelf life of its own. A pass from DLT e-Learning stays valid for 6 months from the date you completed it. Leave it longer than that and you have to sit the course again, so the safest approach is to book your appointment straight after training rather than leaving a long gap.
Sequence matters here. Do the course first, then get the medical certificate, because the certificate is only valid for 1 month, far shorter than the training result. Getting the certificate first and then having your appointment pushed back usually means paying for a second one.
Documents to bring to the transport office

The medical certificate trips up more people than anything else. Beyond the one-month validity, it has to be the Medical Council's approved form, not the general sick-note version. Any clinic or hospital can issue it and it does not have to be a government hospital, but say clearly that it is for a driver's license so you get the right form.
Renewal fees for cars and motorcycles
The fee depends on the type of license. Renewing a five-year private license costs 505 baht for a car (500 baht for the license plus a 5 baht application fee) and 255 baht for a motorcycle (250 baht plus 5 baht).
A first-time two-year temporary license is cheaper, at 205 baht for a car (200 baht plus 5 baht) and 105 baht for a motorcycle (100 baht plus 5 baht). When you later convert that temporary license into a five-year one, you pay the five-year rate of 505 or 255 baht.

Even a license that lapsed more than three years ago does not put you back to square one, and the two-hour course can still be taken through DLT e-Learning. What gets added is the written and driving tests, which have to be done at a transport office. The exact conditions vary by license type.
Upgrading a 2-year temporary license to a 5-year one
People holding the two-year temporary license often assume they need to sit the online course too. They do not. The official procedure for converting a temporary license into a five-year private one has no training step at all: document check, physical fitness test, payment, photo, new card.
The conditions are that you have held the temporary license for at least one year and that it has not expired. Let it expire and you fall back into the lapsed-license rules: more than a year adds a written test, more than three years adds a driving test on top.
Knowing this in advance saves you an hour of video. You still need the medical certificate issued within the past month, and booking through DLT Smart Queue is still the sensible move.
Penalties for an expired license, and how it affects car insurance
