How Early Can You Renew a Thai Driving Licence? Finding Your First Renewal Date

You can renew a Thai driving licence up to 6 months before its expiry date under Department of Land Transport regulations. This applies to 5-year private car and motorcycle licences. A 2-year temporary licence has separate eligibility conditions, including having held it for at least 1 year. Talata, a marketplace for cars, motorcycles and other goods, explains how to work out your first eligible renewal date and plan your preparations.
You Can Renew Your Driving Licence Up to 6 Months in Advance Under Department of Land Transport Regulations
Renewing a driving licence in advance means applying for renewal before your existing licence expires. Department of Land Transport regulations allow you to apply up to 6 months beforehand.
This period is set out in Clause 16 of the Department of Land Transport regulation governing driving licences and driver identification cards under the Motor Vehicle Act, as amended in 2021. It states that renewal applications may be submitted no more than 6 months before the licence expires. The amendment was announced on 31 March 2021 and took effect on 1 April 2021.
The regulation specifies months, rather than a fixed number of days. The 180-day figure used by many websites is therefore an approximation. Use calendar months when calculating your renewal date, as explained below.
Can You Renew Your Driving Licence More Than 90 Days Before It Expires?
Yes. The regulation allows applications up to 6 months before expiry. If you find information saying you can renew only 90 days in advance, check when it was published. The 6-month window has applied since the 2021 amendment changed the advance renewal period.
Do All Types of Driving Licence Have the Same Advance Renewal Rules?
The rules are not identical for every licence type. Five-year licences and public-service driving licences share the same 6-month window. Two-year temporary licences fall under a different provision, while lifetime licences do not need renewal.
| Licence type | When you can apply | Conditions to know | Is training required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five-year private licence for cars, motorcycles or three-wheeled vehicles | Up to 6 months before expiry | The standard process applies if the licence is still valid or has expired for no more than 1 year | 1 hour of training |
| Two-year temporary licence changed to a five-year licence | After holding the licence for at least 1 year, while it is still valid | The regulation treats this as an application for a new licence, rather than a renewal | No training required |
| Public-service driving licence for cars, three-wheeled vehicles or motorcycles | Up to 6 months before expiry | Covered by Clause 16 of the same regulation | Public-service licence training is required; the duration depends on the circumstances |
| Lifetime licence | No renewal required | Remains valid without an expiry date | No |
How Early Can You Renew a Five-Year Driving Licence for Another Five Years?
You can apply from 6 months before the expiry date printed on your licence. The same rule applies to car and motorcycle licences. If your licence is still valid or has expired for no more than 1 year, the standard renewal process includes 1 hour of training, physical aptitude tests and an application at a transport office.
How Early Can You Change a Two-Year Driving Licence to a Five-Year Licence?
A 2-year temporary licence follows different rules from a 5-year licence. You must have held the temporary licence for at least 1 year, and it must still be valid. The regulation classifies this change as a licence application under Clause 9, rather than a renewal under Clause 16.
Many websites describe both types as having the same 6-month advance renewal window. However, Clause 16 sets that window for renewals, while Clause 9 separately specifies the requirement to have held a temporary licence for at least 1 year. If you intend to apply with more than 6 months remaining on your temporary licence, call 1584 or contact your chosen transport office before travelling.
Holders of a 2-year licence do not need training. The official process consists of document checks, physical aptitude tests, payment and a photograph for the new licence.
How Early Can You Renew Public-Service and Type 2 Transport Driving Licences?
Public-service driving licences for cars, three-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles can also be renewed up to 6 months before expiry. They are covered by Clause 16 of the same regulation as private licences.
Transport driving licences in categories ท.1 to ท.4 fall under the Land Transport Act and are governed separately from private licences. The Department of Land Transport regulation on transport personnel licence renewals also allows applications up to 6 months before expiry. For an explanation of the vehicles covered by each category, see our guide to Types of Driving Licence in Thailand.
Does a Lifetime Driving Licence Need to Be Renewed?
A lifetime driving licence does not need renewal because it has no expiry date. If the card is lost or damaged, you must apply for a replacement, which is a separate process from renewal.
How to Calculate the First Day You Can Renew Your Driving Licence
Check the expiry date on your card or in the DLT QR License app, then count back 6 calendar months. This gives you the first date on which you can submit your application.
For example, if your licence expires on 15 March 2027, counting back 6 months gives you 15 September 2026. You can apply at a transport office from that date. An appointment on 1 September 2026 would be too early.
The relevant date is the day you submit your application at the transport office, rather than the day you book an appointment in the app. If you book well ahead, check that your appointment falls within the 6-month window. If it falls exactly on the first eligible day, you may want to allow another 2 to 3 days, as calendar months vary in length. Ask the office if you are unsure.
When Should You Complete Training, Get a Medical Certificate and Book an Appointment?
Complete your training first, book an appointment, then obtain your medical certificate. Online training results remain valid for 6 months, while a medical certificate is valid for 1 month. Getting the certificate too early could mean paying for another one before your appointment.
| Timing | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| When you enter the 6-month renewal window | Complete 1 hour of training through DLT e-Learning | The training result can be used for 6 months from the date you pass |
| After passing the training | Book through DLT Smart Queue | Some offices may be fully booked several days ahead |
| Within 1 month before your appointment | Obtain a medical certificate | The certificate must have been issued no more than 1 month before you submit your application |
| On your appointment day | Arrive at the transport office before 3:30 p.m. | This is the stated cut-off time for fee payments |
Waiting until you have an appointment before obtaining your medical certificate reduces the risk of it expiring before use. Bring your original Thai national ID card, existing driving licence and medical certificate. Since 19 February 2021, a medical certificate has been required for all renewal cases, not only for expired licences. For a screen-by-screen training guide, see Online Driving Licence Training.
You still need to take physical aptitude tests at the transport office. However, the Department of Land Transport announced revised requirements on 15 June 2026. Colour vision testing is no longer required for renewals. Applicants aged 55 or younger whose licences have expired for no more than 1 year take only peripheral vision and depth perception tests. Applicants over 55, or those whose licences have expired for more than 1 year, must also take a foot reaction test.
The fee for a 5-year licence is 505 baht for cars and 255 baht for motorcycles. See our Online Driving Licence Renewal guide for further details on documents and fees.
How Long After Your Driving Licence Expires Can You Renew It?
You can still renew an expired licence, but the longer it has expired, the more steps are required. The length of the lapse determines which training and tests you must complete.
- Expired for no more than 1 year: Follow the standard renewal process, including 1 hour of training.
- Expired for more than 1 year but no more than 3 years: Complete 2 hours of training and an additional written test.
- Expired for more than 3 years: Complete 2 hours of training, a written test and a driving test.
Do not drive while your licence is expired. Driving with an expired licence carries a fine of up to 2,000 baht under Section 65 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Is There an Extension for Licences Affected by Flooding in September and October 2026?

Yes, for eligible applicants in the affected areas. The Department of Land Transport announced an extension for deadlines falling between 28 September and 30 October 2026 in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and provinces where the governor has declared a flood disaster area.
Eligible applicants who apply by 30 October 2026 can receive exemptions from the written and driving tests normally required after a licence has expired for more than 1 or 3 years. Medical certificates and e-Learning results that expire during the specified period may also be accepted.
Some transport offices in Bangkok and surrounding provinces changed their opening arrangements or limited services to appointments during the disruption. Check your chosen office’s announcement before travelling.
What Should You Do If You Will Be Abroad When Your Licence Expires?
Your main options are to renew before travelling once you are within the 6-month window, or to renew after returning to Thailand. The regulation does not specify an exception allowing applications more than 6 months in advance for this situation.
If you return and renew within 1 year after expiry, the standard process still applies. After more than 1 year, an additional written test is required. You must still attend a transport office in person for physical aptitude tests and to obtain your new licence. If you expect to be abroad for longer, call 1584 before planning your return.
Before visiting the office, check your licence expiry date, appointment date and medical certificate issue date to make sure your application and documents fall within the required periods. Once your licence is renewed, if you are looking for another vehicle or planning to sell your current one, browse Car and Motorcycle Listings on Talata. Compare prices and vehicle condition, then contact advertisers directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Days in Advance Can You Renew a Driving Licence?
You can renew approximately 180 days before expiry, but the regulation specifies a maximum of 6 months. The exact number of days depends on the months involved. Count back 6 calendar months from the expiry date on your card rather than using a fixed number of days.
How Far in Advance Can You Complete Online Driving Licence Training?
DLT e-Learning results can be used within 6 months of passing the training. After that, you must complete it again. Starting when you enter the 6-month renewal window gives you time to prepare and use the result before it expires.
Can You Book a Renewal Appointment Before the Six-Month Window Begins?
Choose an appointment date within the 6 months before your licence expires. The regulation refers to the date you submit your application, rather than the date you make the booking. Before confirming in DLT Smart Queue, compare the appointment date with the expiry date on your card.
Can You Complete an Advance Driving Licence Renewal Entirely Online?
According to the information announced on 15 June 2026, the entire process was not yet available online. The Department of Land Transport said its electronic renewal system was still being developed and that it would announce when the service was ready. At that time, training and appointment booking could be completed online, while physical aptitude tests and collection of the new licence required a visit to a transport office.
Are Advance Renewal Rules Different for People Over 55?
The advance application window is the same: up to 6 months before expiry. The difference is in the physical aptitude tests. Under the requirements announced in June 2026, applicants over 55 must take a foot reaction test in addition to peripheral vision and depth perception tests.
What Is the Fine for Driving with an Expired Licence?
The fine is up to 2,000 baht under Section 65 of the Motor Vehicle Act. This also applies when driving to view a used car or test-driving someone else’s vehicle. Renew before your licence expires; you can apply from 6 months before the expiry date.
